Diabetic Foot Exams

A diabetic foot exam is vital for individuals with diabetes due to their increased risk of developing foot problems resulting from nerve and blood vessel damage because of high blood sugar levels. Diabetic neuropathy, caused by this damage, can lead to numbness or a loss of sensation in the feet, making it challenging to detect calluses, blisters, or cuts. If left untreated, these issues can progress to ulcers and infections, potentially necessitating amputation. A diabetic foot exam aims to identify these problems early to prevent severe complications. The process involves gathering information about medical history, diabetes management, medications, and any symptoms experienced. A thorough skin examination checks for dryness, cracking, calluses, blisters, ulcers, or other abnormalities and compares the temperature of the feet for symmetry. Nerve function and sensation in the feet, blood flow, and foot and ankle pulses are assessed, as well as musculoskeletal problems like bent or overlapping toes. To maintain healthy feet, individuals with diabetes should perform daily self-checks and practice proper foot hygiene. If you have diabetes, it is suggested that you make an appointment to see a podiatrist and include this specialist among your healthcare providers to see regularly.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. If you are suffering from diabetes or have any other concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Rosa Roman from Ankle and Foot Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

Dealing With High Arches in the Feet

Dealing with high foot arches, medically known as cavus foot or pes cavus, can present challenges and discomfort. Unlike flat feet, where the arch is too low, a cavus foot has a higher-than-normal arch. This can result in foot pain or more severe problems. The causes of cavus foot are diverse, including a genetic predisposition as well as biomechanical or neurological factors. Conditions like cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or stroke may contribute to its development, necessitating a professional diagnosis to determine the root cause. Symptoms include a conspicuous high arch while standing, inward heel tilting, and weight distribution that favors the ball of the foot and heel. Toe clenching, calluses, and pain in the top and middle foot areas during walking or standing are also common. Shoe fitting challenges and frequent ankle sprains due to imbalance also characterize high arches. Surgery is reserved for extreme cases when non-surgical remedies, such as custom orthotics, prove ineffective. If you believe that you have high foot arches that are causing problems, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for treatment options.

If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Rosa Roman from Ankle and Foot Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

Unveiling the Importance of Baby's Feet

New parents experience a mix of excitement and nervousness as they welcome their baby. They diligently observe their child's movements to monitor developmental progress. One crucial aspect of this assessment is the Babinski reflex, also known as the plantar reflex, which doctors use to evaluate a baby's neurological development. These reflexes are spontaneous responses triggered by touch or loud sounds, which play a vital role in a baby's survival. When the baby's foot is stroked from heel to toe, the Babinski reflex causes the big toe to flex upward while the other toes fan out. This response indicates effective communication between the brain and spinal cord. Unlike other newborn reflexes, the Babinski reflex persists longer, typically vanishing between six months to one or two years of age. If you are a new parent and would like to learn more about the significance of your baby’s feet, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist who can educate you and answer any questions you might have.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Rosa Roman of Ankle and Foot Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

How Purines in Your Food Can Cause Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis and is caused by an overabundance of urates in the system. The urates can form needle-like crystals in the joints, commonly in the big toe. Sudden bouts of extreme pain, swelling, redness, and stiffness develop almost out of nowhere and can last a week or more. They can start at any time and are often experienced at night. Besides genetics and certain lifestyle choices, one of the main causes of gout is eating foods and drinking beverages rich in purines. These can be found in red meat, organ and game meats, and even turkey. The types of seafood that are rich in purines are herring, scallops, mussels, codfish, tuna, and trout. In addition, sugary drinks and foods that are high in fructose contain large amounts of purines. While alcoholic beverages are not high in purines, they can inhibit the kidneys from eliminating uric acid, which furthers the buildup of urates. Gravy and meat sauces, as well as yeast and yeast extracts, are also high in purines. For more information on ways to reduce uric acid and cut back on the effects of gout, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist who is trained to deal with this condition.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Rosa Roman from Ankle and Foot Center. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

Facts About Fungal Toenail Infections

A fungal nail infection is about four times more likely to occur in the toes than in the fingers, and it can affect the entire nail. Symptoms of a fungal toenail infection include discoloration of the nail and thickening of the nail. While it may seem benign and therefore largely ignored, if a fungal nail infection is allowed to spread, it can lead to cellulitis or osteomyelitis. Besides exposure to a fungus, conditions that can lead to an infection include wearing shoes and socks that keep the feet sweaty. The fungus thrives in a moist, warm atmosphere, common around gym locker rooms and swimming pool shower areas. Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes and psoriasis, can increase the risk of such an infection. Men, especially those older than 60 are more likely to develop a fungal toenail infection. Treatment of a fungal toenail infection includes antifungal tablets or paint, and laser treatments. If a new nail begins to grow under the affected one, that is a sign that the treatment is working. For details, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Rosa Roman of Ankle and Foot Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus is a condition that affects many people and can be especially hard to get rid of. Fortunately, there are several methods to go about treating and avoiding it.

Antifungals & Deterrence

Oral antifungal medicine has been shown to be effective in many cases. It is important to consult with a podiatrist to determine the proper regiment for you, or potentially explore other options.

Applying foot powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.

Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.
